The women have a pioneering role in this year's Tour de France: La Course by Le Tour will take place on Saturday, 26 June 2021, on parts of stage 1 of the men's race. According to race organiser ASO, the race has been brought forward by one day so as not to hinder access to the polling stations for the second round of the regional elections in France. The route covers 107.7 kilometres from Brest to Landernau. The final 42 kilometres will include four climbs over the Cote de la fosse aux loups, a 3rd category climb, which is also the highest point of the finish line. The race starts at 8.20am and the finish is expected at 11.20am. The men will follow later on the same day on part of the course.

In an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian, the director of the Tour de France, Christian Prudhomme, said that next year (2022) there would also be a stage race for women. This will be called the Tour de France feminin and will start after the arrival of the men in Paris, as it is not possible to organise both competitions at the same time. However, a spokesperson for the race organiser ASO did not want to confirm that the race would take place in this form.
