The first season was released on 8 June and was intended to open up a wider audience for cycling. The producers of the series had previously achieved this with the Formula 1 series "Drive to survive".
The eight-part main field series received a lot of praise, but also criticism. For example, the topic of doping was not addressed at all. At the last Tour, which the series revolves around, sixth-placed Colombian Nairo Quintana was subsequently disqualified. He was found to have used the painkiller Tramadol, which is not considered doping per se, but is banned in competition by the UCI.
In addition, some professionals felt that the makers had deliberately misrepresented them so that, in their opinion, an exciting story could be told.
