The most lucrative special classification of the Tour de France has always been the overall classification, which pays 500,000 euros. No wonder that UAE Emirates around overall winner Tadej Pogacar is also the king of prize money at the 107th Tour de France. The Slovenian, who just turned 22 on Tuesday 21 September, and his seven colleagues collected a total of 624,230 euros in prize money over the 21 stage days. With his three stage wins, the yellow leader's jersey, the dotted mountain jersey and the white jersey of the best young rider alone, Pogacar secured 578,000 euros in bonuses.
The German team Bora-hansgrohe was unable to repeat last year's success in 2020 with fourth place overall for Emanuel Buchmann and the green jersey for Peter Sagan. The Upper Bavarians' prize money haul is correspondingly meagre. After almost 160,000 euros in the previous year, the team only received 69,720 euros this time, including Lennard Kämna's stage win, which was rewarded with 11,000 euros.
The French Équipe Arkéa-Samsic, whose top riders Barguil (14th) and Quintana (17th) clearly missed out on the expected top ten places, came last in the prize money table. In the end, the team only received 15,600 euros, which is over 2,000 euros less than last year's last-placed Total-Direct Energie.
Curious: Even the overall fifth place in Paris (Enric Mas/Movistar) still receives twice as much as the winner of the mountains or points classification (Tadej Pogacar or Sam Bennett). The best young professional (Pogacar) and the most combative rider of the Tour (Marc Hirschi/Sunweb), as determined by a jury, will be rewarded with 20,000 euros.
Cycling still lives more from sponsorship money than from competition bonuses. Usually, the total sum is divided equally between all eight riders on the team and the technicians, trainers and masseurs after more than three weeks of exertion.
Converted, Tour winner Pogacar receives 143.55 euros per kilometre driven. In comparison: darts pro Peter Wrigth received the equivalent of a measly 565,00 euros for his victory in the World Championship final against Michael Van Gerwen. German tennis pro Alexander Zverev even received 1.5 million euros in prize money for his defeat in the final at the US Open. Even participants who are eliminated from the tournament in round one receive more than double the prize money for the best sprinter (Bennett) or climber (Pogacar) at 61,000 euros!
