Time trial specialists will be disappointed by the stage schedule of the 102nd Tour de France: only a short individual time trial over 14 kilometres and a team time trial over 28 kilometres are on the programme. The only consolation: the winner of the opening time trial in Utrecht will slip into the yellow jersey.

After the stages in the Netherlands and Belgium, the route first leads to northern France, where there are also seven cobbled sections to overcome on stage 4. A team time trial awaits the riders on stage 9 before heading into the Pyrenees. The last difficult climbing stages are then in the French Alps. On the penultimate day, the riders will cross the Galibier Pass to the ski resort of L'Alpe d'Huez. A total of 26 mountain classifications in the HC, 1 and 2 categories await the pros.

Organiser ASO has also changed the rules for the flat stages. In the first week, the sprinters will have the chance to win the yellow jersey after the short time trial - thanks to the reintroduction of time credits: On stages two to eight, ten, six and four seconds will be credited to the first three at the day's finish. There is also a new points system for the green jersey: on the nine flat stages, the stage winner receives 50 points instead of 45 as in the previous year; the runner-up only 30 instead of 35 points; the points for the other places have also been reduced. The ASO wants to increase the value of stage wins on the flat stages.
