After a serious training accident in the spring, John Degenkolb's season was almost over and he still has problems with the injuries to his hand. The 27-year-old from Frankfurt had just risen to the top of the cycling Olympics: Last year, he won both the Milan-San Remo and Paris Roubaix monuments and would have gone into the spring classics as the favourite. And he would certainly have been in with a chance of winning a stage at the Tour de France. This makes his fourth place today all the better and at the moment he will be happy that he can ride the Tour to the end.
