On the third day of the tour, the peloton reaches France – just a few kilometres after setting off from Geneva. The climb begins just as quickly. The Col de la Faucille is 11.4 kilometres long with an average gradient of 6.3 per cent and is the first Category 1 climb of the race. This marks the start of the Jura Mountains, where the rest of the day’s racing will take place.

However, the highest point of the day, the Faucille at just over 1,300 metres, is already reached after 24 kilometres. Shortly after descending from there, the Côte de Lajoux (3rd category) awaits. The route then continues for around 30 kilometres, sometimes more, sometimes less downhill, before the Col de la Savine (2nd category) comes up. After that, the terrain is downhill again.

Apart from a few minor climbs such as the Côte de Chaux-Champagny (4th category), around 24 kilometres from the finish – followed just 600 metres later by the Tour’s first bonus sprint – there are no further major obstacles to contend with. After a ten-kilometre descent, there is a flat section leading to Poligny, where the finale takes place on a long, gently ascending home straight. The final challenges lie just past the 2,000-metre mark, including a sharp left-hand bend.

A sporting analysis of Stage 3 of the 2026 Tour de France Femmes

The women are set to contest their first final in France, following in the men’s footsteps. On the roads where Matej Mohoric won as a breakaway rider ahead of Kasper Asgreen in 2023, a female breakaway rider may now also have a chance of claiming the stage victory. The course profile, with a difficult start and a comparatively easy finish, certainly offers opportunities for a breakaway group.

However, in such a scenario, the bonus sprint could throw a spanner in the works; those six seconds might seem very valuable to some general classification riders and could therefore provide an incentive to let the team work to reel in any breakaway riders in good time.

By contrast, a mass sprint involving large sections of the peloton and the female sprinters seems rather unlikely. Admittedly, once the day’s biggest obstacles have been overcome, there would still be enough time to close even larger gaps. Nevertheless, the best chances are likely to lie with riders such as Mischa Bredewold, Lotte Kopecky (both Team SD Worx – Protime), Franziska Koch (FDJ United – SUEZ), Noemi Rüegg (EF Education-Oatly) or even Puck Pieterse (Fenix-Premier Tech) – in other words, the group of strong sprinters specialising in the classics. A decision from a large group seems the most likely scenario.
