"Two out of three bones have healed. The scaphoid still needs a little more time," said the Slovenian two days before the start in Bilbao. "I'm still a long way from regaining full mobility, I'm maybe at 60 or 70 per cent. But I didn't have any problems in training." Last year's runner-up will start as top favourite alongside defending champion Jonas Vingegaard in the world's most important cycling race on Saturday.
Pogacar had crashed in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic. Due to his early start in roller training, he developed problems as a result of a gentle posture. "I had to work a bit more with physiotherapists and osteopaths. I've never done that before," said the 24-year-old. Before the Tour, Pogacar only competed in the Slovenian championships, where he won the time trial and the road race last weekend.
