New freedom: Without a dedicated general classification rider, Team Soudal Quick-Step will be focusing primarily on stage wins
Without Remco Evenepoel, the Soudal Quick-Step team will be able to capitalise on its versatility in the battle for stage wins at the Tour

There has been a key personnel change at Soudal Quick-Step. Top star Remco Evenepoel is no longer riding for the team. On the one hand, this certainly means fewer opportunities for major victories; on the other, however, it gives the other riders more freedom, whilst making the team harder for their opponents to read. Despite Evenepoel’s departure, the team boasts a host of very good riders and a mix of experienced riders such as Mikel Landa and young talents such as Ilan Van Wilder for the general classification. In addition, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Jasper Stuyven and Tim Merlier are likely to be in contention for stage wins. They, too, could benefit from the fact that the battle for a top position in the general classification is not the main focus.

As a student of German and political science, the flawless amateur sportsman once decided to try his luck as a journalist. His passion for racing bikes led him straight to the TOUR editorial team as an intern, which has since become an affair of the heart that has lasted more than 30 years, 16 of them as editor-in-chief. As a - in his own words - "generalist in the cycling niche", he is interested in all topics relating to road bikes (and gravel bikes) and is still particularly enthusiastic about racing today. Highlights of his own career as a racing cyclist include taking part in the TOUR-Transalp, the odd everyman race and regular Alpine tours with friends.
