INEOS Grenadiers: From Sky team to British cycling powerhouse

Dominance in Grand Tours

The INEOS Grenadiers are a British cycling team that has been competing in the highest category of road cycling since 2010. Originally founded as Team Sky, the team dominated the Tour de France in the 2010s with seven overall victories. After being taken over by the chemical company INEOS in 2019, the team remained successful, but also suffered setbacks. For the 2025 season, the team is aiming to return to the top of the world with new riders.

The INEOS Grenadiers are one of the most successful and financially strongest teams in professional road cycling. The British team was founded in 2010 as the Sky Professional Cycling Team and quickly developed into a dominant force in the Grand Tours, especially the Tour de France. With a budget of around 50 million euros in 2023, the team had the largest financial resources of any UCI WorldTeam. The success story began in 2012, when Bradley Wiggins became the first Briton to win the Tour de France. Further Tour victories followed in the following years by Chris Froome (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017), Geraint Thomas (2018) and Egan Bernal (2019). In addition to the successes at the Tour of France, the team also won the Giro d'Italia (2018, 2020, 2021) and the Vuelta a España (2011, 2017).

From Team Sky to INEOS Grenadiers

At the end of 2018, the media group Sky announced its withdrawal as a sponsor. In May 2019, the British chemicals group INEOS took over the team. Under the new name INEOS Grenadiers, the team initially continued its run of success. Egan Bernal became the first South American to win the Tour de France in 2019. This was followed in 2020 by Tao Geoghegan Hart's overall victory at the Giro d'Italia despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, Egan Bernal also secured victory at the Giro. However, the team also suffered setbacks in the following years. At the 2020 and 2021 Tour de France, the INEOS Grenadiers missed out on the overall podium for the first time in a long time.

Realignment and challenges

In the 2022 to 2024 seasons, there were no major successes in the Grand Tours. The team had to face increasing competition from teams such as Jumbo-Visma (now Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and UAE Team Emirates. Nevertheless, important victories continued, such as Dylan van Baarle's triumph at Paris-Roubaix 2022, and the INEOS Grenadiers continued to strengthen their ranks with promising young riders such as Carlos Rodríguez, who finished fifth in the 2023 Tour de France as the team's best rider. At the same time, long-standing top performers such as Egan Bernal, Richard Carapaz and Tao Geoghegan Hart left the team.

Outlook for the 2025 season

The INEOS Grenadiers have once again reorganised their team for the 2025 season. Experienced professionals Bob Jungels, Axel Laurance and sprinter Caleb Ewan have joined the team. At the same time, the team continues to focus on young talents such as Joshua Tarling, who became Junior World Time Trial Champion in 2023. The team is led by John Allert as the new CEO after Dave Brailsford, the long-time architect of the team's success, retired. With this mix of experienced professionals and up-and-coming talent, the INEOS Grenadiers aim to build on previous successes. In January 2025, reports were also published that the British team could receive a new main sponsor in the second half of the season.
