EF Education-EasyPost: US cycling team with a chequered history

WorldTour team focusses on versatility

EF Education-EasyPost is an American cycling team based in Boulder. Founded by Jonathan Vaughters, the team has been racing in the highest category of road cycling since 2009. After several name changes, the team has been competing under its current name since 2022 and is dedicated to classic road races as well as endurance and gravel races.

EF Education-EasyPost is one of the established teams in professional cycling. The US team was founded in 2003 by Jonathan Vaughters and has become a permanent fixture in the UCI WorldTour over the years. The team has its origins in the amateur sector, where it initially competed under the name TIAA-CREF. In 2007, the team was promoted to the second division of cycling as a Professional Continental Team. Since 2009, the team has held a licence as a ProTeam or WorldTour team and thus belongs to the elite of road cycling. Over the past two decades, the team has undergone several name changes due to changing main sponsors. The best-known names include Garmin-Transitions, Cannondale-Garmin and EF Education First. Since 2022, the team has been competing under the name EF Education-EasyPost.

Focus on promoting young talent and anti-doping

From the very beginning, the team focussed strongly on promoting young talent. Numerous future top riders started their professional careers in Jonathan Vaughters' team. At the same time, the team became involved in the anti-doping movement early on. It is a member of the movement for credible cycling and is committed to clean sport. Until 2015, the team went 15 years without a positive doping test. Then rider Tom Danielson tested positive for synthetic testosterone, which was a setback for the team's anti-doping efforts. Despite this incident, EF Education-EasyPost is sticking to its strict anti-doping policy.

Realignment and innovative concepts

EF Education-EasyPost has undergone an interesting reorientation in recent years. In addition to classic road races, the team has also been focussing on endurance races and races on gravel roads since 2019. The team is thus responding to new trends in cycling and opening up additional fields of activity away from the traditional racing calendar. This strategy is intended to increase attractiveness for sponsors and appeal to new target groups. One example of this innovative approach was the team's appearance at the Giro d'Italia 2020, where it competed with an unconventional jersey design featuring a Donald Duck motif from sponsor Palace. The campaign caused quite a stir, but also earned the team a fine from the International Cycling Union (UCI).

Current developments and future prospects

EF Education-EasyPost will start the 2025 season with a multinational squad. One of the most prominent new additions is classics specialist Kasper Asgreen. The team continues to rely on a mix of experienced professionals and young talent. In addition to its successes in the grand tours and classics, EF Education-EasyPost also wants to cause a stir in alternative race formats in the future. The cooperation with the EF Education-TIBCO-SVB women's cycling team, which began in 2022, underlines the team's commitment to promoting women's cycling. With this broad positioning and innovative concept, EF Education-EasyPost aims to assert itself in the highly competitive WorldTour and consolidate its position as one of the leading US cycling teams.
