Frankfurt/Main (dpa) - Former German cycling star Jan Ullrich (47) has wished his long-time rival Lance Armstrong a happy 50th birthday.

"A good three years ago, in the most difficult phase of my life, you, dear Lance, were there for me. You gave me a helping hand and showed me that the greatest rival can become a true friend. Your support has contributed to the fact that I am healthy again today and have my life under control," wrote Ullrich in the article published by "Bild am Sonntag". Armstrong had his 50th birthday on Saturday.

"Your 50th birthday is the perfect occasion to look back on the countless races we have contested together. Exciting moments, thrilling successes and bitter defeats. But I'll pass on that," wrote Ullrich, who never got past the American in Armstrong's best period at the Tour de France from 1999 to 2005. Armstrong was later stripped of all Tour titles due to doping. They were also not re-awarded.

"I wish you all the very best for your future and look forward to our next reunion. Preferably in private on a racing bike," wrote Ullrich, concluding his comments with a personal greeting: "Your Jan Ullrich.
