German road cycling champion Maximilian Schachmann has dropped out of the top ten at the Tour de Romandie.
The 28-year-old Berliner finished the first stage of 178 kilometres from La Grande Beroche to Romont more than four minutes behind the Belgian stage winner Dylan Teuns. The new overall leader is the former time trial world champion Rohan Dennis from Australia, who finished second on the day. The British prologue winner Ethan Hayter had to relinquish the overall lead after a mass crash in the peloton.
Schachmann had recently taken a two-month break due to coronavirus and an infection. The second stage of the six-day WorldTour tour leads over 168.2 kilometres around Echallens on Thursday. The race, which Andreas Klöden was the only German to win to date in 2008, ends on Sunday in Villars.
