Leuven (dpa) - The 2025 Road Cycling World Championships will take place in Rwanda's capital Kigali. This was confirmed by the UCI via Twitter after the congress in Leuven, Belgium.

Rwanda's national federation had previously published a photo of the Rwandan delegation receiving a framed rainbow jersey. It will be the first time that the Road World Championships have been held in Africa.

"Cycling is breaking new ground with the announcement of Kigali as the host of our 2025 Road World Championships. The Rwandan capital provides a magnificent backdrop for the event's first appearance on African soil," wrote UCI President David Lappartient. Rwanda and Morocco were chosen as the organisers.

After the 2021 title fights currently taking place in Flanders, Wollongong (Australia) in 2022, Glasgow (Scotland) in 2023 and Zurich in 2024 will be next in line. It remains to be seen when Aigle-Martigny, which was replaced by Imola (Italy) at short notice in 2020 due to the coronavirus, could host the event again.
