French cycling world champion Julian Alaphilippe suffered a serious injury in his crash in the spring classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège seriously injured.
The 29-year-old broke a shoulder blade and two ribs in the pile-up 62 kilometres before the finish. He also suffered a lung injury. This was announced by his team Quick Step. His condition is stable. Alaphilippe will remain in hospital for observation for the time being. It was not announced how long he will be out of action.
Alaphilippe's Belgian team-mate Ilan Van Wilder was also involved in the accident. He broke his jaw and is also receiving further treatment in hospital. Belgian young star Remco Evenepoel, who also rides for Quick Step, secured victory in the classic.
