Liane Lippert (l) durfte sich in Valkenburg über Platz drei freuen.

Liane Lippert achieved her best result of the season after a strong performance at the Amstel Gold Race.

The 24-year-old from the DSM cycling team finished third after 128.5 kilometres through the foothills of the Dutch Ardennes. The victory in Valkenburg was secured by the Italian Marta Cavalli with a narrow lead over a six-strong chasing group, in which the Dutchwoman Demi Vollering distanced Lippert in the sprint.

As so often on the Cauberg, the preliminary decision was made a few kilometres before the finish. A hard attack by former world champion Annemiek van Vleuten was initially only followed by Lippert, before five other riders caught up. Shortly after the summit of the Cauberg, the former Italian road cycling champion Cavalli launched the ultimately successful counterattack. The Dutch top favourite van Vleuten could only manage fourth place.
