Jonas Vingegaard has won the 13th stage of the 2023 Vuelta a Espana on the Col du Tourmalet - Jumbo-Visma even celebrates a triple victory. Remco Evenepoel has to bury his ambitions of defending the title.
Jumbo-Visma has humiliated the competition at the 2023 Vuelta a Espana. Jonas Vingegaard won the 13th stage on the legendary Col du Tourmalet. Sepp Kuss in second and Primoz Roglic completed the Dutch team's triple triumph. Last year's winner Remco Evenepoel had a pitch-black day, suffered a serious collapse and lost all chances in the battle for overall victory.
Vingegaard broke away from the group of favourites on the final climb and celebrated a solo victory. Behind him, Sepp Kuss left the competition behind around one kilometre before the finish and Primoz Roglic sprinted from the chasing group to third place. This means that the three Jumbo-Visma pros now also occupy the top three places in the overall standings.
"I couldn't have picked a better day because it's my daughter's birthday today and I really wanted to win for her," said Vingegaard in the official winner's interview.
There were many attacks up to the foot of the Col d'Aubisque, but no breakaway group was able to break away decisively. On the climb to the Aubisque, Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) showed up at the front and built up a small lead with a large group, which, however, was not able to stay in front for long.
On the Aubisque, Remco Evenepoel also dropped out of the group of favourites, as did Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates). Jumbo-Visma pushed the pace and it quickly became clear that it would be the beginning of the end for Evenepoel in the overall classification at the 2023 Vuelta a Espana. The Belgian finally gave up on the Col de Spandelles and crossed the finish line more than 27 minutes behind.
On the descent from the Aubisque, Bahrain-Victorious pushed the pace hard and broke up the group of favourites. At the start of the Col de Spandelles, however, everything came together again. It didn't take long before Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious) and Jonas Vingegaard attacked. UAE Team Emirates closed the gap again. It went back and forth before Jumbo-Visma took control again. Michael Storer (Groupama-FDJ) secured the 10 mountain points on the Col de Spandelles. Having previously been first over the Aubisque, he took a virtual lead in the mountains classification. However, Vingegaard's victory meant that he was overtaken by the Dane.
Jumbo-Visma led the group of favourites to the foot of the Col du Tourmalet. There, Vingegaard attacked eight kilometres before the finish. Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) parried the Tour de France winner's first attack, but nobody was able to follow the Dane's second attack. He quickly built up a lead of around 30 seconds. The chasers, which included Ayuso, Enric Mas (Movistar), Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Cian Uijtdebroeks (Bora-Hansgrohe), developed into a cat-and-mouse game. No one was prepared to make a determined effort to lead the bunch.
Instead, the chasers attacked each other, which meant that Vingegaard's lead grew to around a minute at times. It was not until around one kilometre before the finish of the 13th stage of the Vuelta a Espana that the chasers regained momentum. Kuss attacked with great vigour and opened up a gap. The US-American was not caught by his former companions until the finish. Behind him, Roglic sprinted away from Ayuso, Uijtdebroeks and Mas to complete the Jumbo-Visma podium.
The Vuelta a Espana starts on Saturday with the 14th stage continue. Another tough day in the mountains with 156.2 kilometres between Sauveterre-de-Bearn and Larra-Belagua.
