With her second stage win, Dutch rider Marianne Vos has extended her overall lead in the women's Tour de France.

The 35-year-old came out on top in the sprint on the sixth stage.

Vos wins ahead of Bastianelli

Italian Marta Bastianelli came second ahead of Lotte Kopecky from Belgium and cycling world champion Elisa Balsamo from Italy. The hilly section of the day led over 129 kilometres from Saint-Dié-des-Vosges in the Vosges to Rosheim.

Three-time road world champion Vos, who was also Olympic champion in 2012, is now 30 seconds ahead of Italy's Silvia Persico and Poland's Katarzyna Niewiadoma. German champion Liane Lippert finished in 24th place in the day's classification and is still 13th overall, 3:09 minutes behind Vos.

On a descent just 25 kilometres before the finish, two-time stage winner Lorena Wiebes from the Netherlands, among others, crashed. She was able to finish the race with bleeding grazes.

German riders in the breakaway group

Although German riders ultimately had nothing to do with the decision, Franziska Koch and Katrin Hammes were part of a 14-strong leading group that was able to break away during the race. At times, the group was around two minutes ahead of the peloton, which eventually accounted for all the breakaway riders.

The seventh stage this Saturday leads over 127.5 kilometres from Sélestat to Le Markstein Fellering. There are three first-category mountain classifications to master. The race ends on Sunday with another mountain stage.
