Nathan Van Hooydonck is taking on the role of sporting director at Team Visma | Lease a Bike with immediate effect. The 30-year-old Belgian will in future lead the team’s sporting management and be responsible for the team’s sporting direction. The former professional cyclist was previously a member of the team’s business team.

Van Hooydonck rode for the Dutch team from 2021 to 2023 and was part of the successful line-ups for the classics and the Tour de France, amongst other events. After retiring from racing, he remained with the team and moved into an organisational role. Now comes the next step in his career: as the new sporting director, he will lead the sporting management team, which includes racing director Marc Reef, head of performance Mathieu Heijboer and team principal Richard Plugge.

“It feels very special to be returning to the sporting side of the team. I was part of it myself as a rider and know just how much passion and ambition there is within this organisation,” says Van Hooydonck of his new role. His time with the business team has helped him to better understand the dynamics within the organisation.

Team principal Plugge is also convinced by the appointment: “Nathan is still young, but incredibly keen to learn and someone who identifies fully with this team and our goals. He doesn’t just know our culture – he lives it,” explains the CEO. Thanks to his experience as a professional and his work outside the sporting arena, Van Hooydonck has what it takes to successfully develop the team further.

For the Belgian, one goal is clearly the main priority: “Ultimately, for me, it’s all about one thing: winning.” To be successful, the entire organisation must work towards the same goal every day and push each other, says Van Hooydonck.
