Although Jonas Vingegaard is not currently set to move teams, behind the scenes the first speculations are already being made about the period after 2028. As Thor Hushovd, team principal of Uno-X Mobility, has now confirmed, he has already made contact with the two-time Tour de France winner. However, a possible transfer would only be conceivable once Vingegaard’s current contract with Visma | Lease a Bike has expired.
The Dane is under contract with the Dutch team until the end of 2028. Accordingly, Hushovd emphasised to the Danish broadcaster TV2 that a move is not currently on the cards. However, the prospect of seeing the greatest Scandinavian stage racer of his generation riding for Uno-X in future clearly appeals to the Norwegian nonetheless.
Unsurprisingly, the biggest challenge here would be the necessary budget. “What puts me off the idea of signing Vingegaard is his salary. It’s quite high,” Hushovd explained candidly. According to the team manager, for a move to be possible at all, something would have to happen on the sponsorship front: “If we want to sign him, we’d need to secure a major Danish company willing to invest additional funds in the team.”
Even for the period after Vingegaard’s contract expires, therefore, nothing is guaranteed. “If something like that is to happen, the timing has to be right,” said Hushovd. At the same time, the former road world champion made it clear that Uno-X remains primarily focused on developing its own talent. “The ideal scenario is to develop a rider ourselves who can win a major race,” explained Hushovd. Whilst a superstar like Vingegaard could significantly increase the chances of success, “it costs a lot of money”.
As things stand, any thoughts of a transfer over the next two years are a long way off. Following his early end to the season due to injury, Vingegaard is fully focused on his return in 2027. According to his team-mate Victor Campenaerts, the 29-year-old has been working on plans for the coming season since the summer. “He’s keen to get a glimpse of what next year might hold,” the Belgian told Wielerflits, revealing that Vingegaard had already wanted to discuss his initial ideas for 2027 as early as the end of August.
Campenaerts was impressed by his captain’s motivation: “It’s great to hear how motivated he is to improve even further.” Looking ahead to Vingegaard and his team’s goals, he makes it clear: “The season stands or falls with the Tour de France.”
Following Tadej Pogacar’s fifth Tour de France victory in 2026, that is likely to be Vingegaard’s main objective as well. Before considering a possible move to Uno-X, the Dane apparently wants first to prevent his great rival from securing a historic sixth Tour victory.
