The 28-year-old won the 169-kilometre race in the Italian province of Treviso, which was largely held on gravel roads, as a soloist ahead of the Belgian Florian Vermeersch. Britain's Connor Swift came third ahead of Spain's Alejandro Valverde. The Belgian top favourite Wout van Aert was thrown back by a crash and finished eighth.
Mohoric made the decisive attack on a climb around 18.5 kilometres before the finish at the World Championships, which were being held for the second time. The classics specialist crashed 3.3 kilometres before the finish, but fell softly onto a bale of hay and only lost a few seconds of his lead.
