"He hardly showed any weakness, I would even say none at all," the former Tour winner told "Sport Bild". The Dane Vingegaard (26) had won the Tour of France with a lead of 7:29 minutes ahead of Tadej Pogacar from Slovenia.
"He fended off every Pogacar attack and mastered every hectic situation. What's more, his team pursued strong tactics. Like on the stage to Courchevel, when two riders helped him on the last climb. Marvellous," was the verdict of 49-year-old Ullrich. He said of Vingegaard's superior success in the time trial: "Fantastic! In a class of his own! Exceptionally good!"
The 1997 Tour winner also singled out two German riders: "The one who really surprised me was Georg Zimmermann. He rode with the big names in the mountains, and Phil Bauhaus' Tour was also very strong," said Ullrich, who now lives in Merdingen in southern Baden. Like Zimmermann, sprinter Bauhaus also finished a stage in second place, the best German daily results in the 110th edition of the Tour.
