UCI World Cycling Championships host cities: Here’s where the World Championships will be held until 2034

​The upcoming venues for the Road World Championships have been confirmed. The International Cycling Union (UCI) has further finalised its plans for the Road World Championships up to 2034, focusing on a mix of established cycling regions, anniversary celebrations and economically strong host nations. Following Rwanda and Canada, the title races are once again set to return to Europe in greater numbers.

In 2025, the World Championships were held in Kigali, Rwanda, for the first time, before returning to Montréal in 2026. The Canadian city had previously hosted the World Championships in 1974 and is organising the races as part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Olympic Games. The route around Mont Royal promises to be another challenging race for the climbing specialists.

Cycling World Championships at Mont Blanc

Whilst the races in Canada are already in full swing, the next major project on the horizon is the 2027 UCI Cycling World Championships in Haute-Savoie Mont-Blanc. Following the debut of the combined World Championships format in Glasgow in 2023, numerous cycling disciplines will once again be held under one roof in 2027. More than 15,000 athletes are set to compete for a total of 288 world championship titles in the French Alps. The views here are sure to be something special. Whilst the professionals will have to concentrate fully on the race, fans will be able to enjoy both the races and the breathtaking scenery in equal measure.

Abu Dhabi without artificial mountains

​In 2028, the Road World Championships will be held in Abu Dhabi. The championships in the United Arab Emirates are set to take place on a predominantly flat course, which should particularly suit the fast men and women. The cycling federation has denied rumours of artificially created hills. UCI Sports Director Peter Van den Abeele has already described the World Championships as the “Sprinters’ World Championships”. Due to the high temperatures, the event has also been scheduled for late October to provide the athletes with more comfortable conditions.

Cycling strongholds

The following year, the World Cycling Championships will be held in Denmark, although the exact host region is yet to be announced. The Scandinavian country has for years been one of the most successful hosts of major cycling events and has already hosted the opening stage of the 2022 Tour de France as well as the 2017 European Championships. With hot temperatures similar to those in Abu Dhabi, the riders are unlikely to have any problems here.

In 2030, the World Championships will return to Belgium. The capital, Brussels, will host the event, thereby putting one of the world’s most traditional cycling nations in the spotlight. For the UCI, the award of the event is also a sign that, despite their global reach, the World Championships continue to rely on the sport’s classic strongholds. Anyone familiar with Belgian fans knows what the cycling world can expect here. There will certainly be no shortage of atmosphere!

Super Cycling World Championships in Trentino

​The 2031 Super World Championships will take place in Trentino, Italy. This marks the return to Europe of this mega-event, which brings together numerous cycling disciplines under one roof. The exact venues have not yet been announced, but the event is set to take place in the Trento area. Mountain biking disciplines in particular are right at home here and have already seen the region host one or two World Cups.

India prevails over the Netherlands

The award for 2032 looks even further into the future: India is set to host the Road World Championships for the first time. The bid from the world’s most populous country prevailed over that of the Netherlands. The Dutch did not, however, come away empty-handed and were instead awarded the 2034 championships. These decisions reflect the UCI’s desire to further globalise cycling and tap into new markets. Not least, financial considerations play a major role in the awarding of the World Cycling Championships.
