A good two weeks before the World Championships road race in Canada, professional cyclist Remco Evenepoel has underlined his ambitions for the rainbow jersey at the Grand Prix de Québec. The Olympic champion from Belgium won the 206-kilometre race in a sprint finish against Italy’s Giulio Ciccone. Third place went to the Dane Anthon Charmig. The German riders Nikias Arndt, Jonas Rutsch and Maximilian Schachmann were part of the leading groups, but ultimately had no chance of victory. Schachmann finished tenth, the best result among the German riders.
Sunday’s Montréal Grand Prix will then serve as a proper dress rehearsal for the World Championships. The circuit is very similar to the route for the World Championships race on 27 September. Following the withdrawal of defending champion Tadej Pogacar, 26-year-old Evenepoel is now considered the favourite. The German team will be led by Evenepoel’s team-mate Florian Lipowitz, who is back in action following his crash at the Tour de France.
