Berlin (dpa) - The Danish professional cyclist Michael Mørkøv, who left the UAE Tour early, is causing a bit of a stir at the Track Cycling World Championships in Berlin.

The 34-year-old is currently in isolation in his hotel room in Berlin and is to be tested for the novel coronavirus. Mørkøv had left Dubai on Thursday, even before the tour was cancelled due to the possible illness of two Italian team members. After that, all those taking part in the tour were not allowed to leave the hotel until they had undergone a Sars-CoV-2 test.

"We are currently reviewing the situation with the head doctor, the local health authorities and other parties involved," the UCI announced. Mørkøv actually wanted to start at the title fights this weekend.

The top-class UAE Tour was cancelled after the fifth stage. "I hope those affected recover quickly and there are no more cases," tweeted four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome, who had made his season debut at the race on the Arabian Peninsula.
