The Danish professional cyclist Jonas Vingegaard has been back on his bike for a short time following his serious crash, but his participation in the Tour de France remains uncertain. "We hope that Jonas will make it to the Tour. That's still a big question mark," Marc Reef, sporting director of Vingegaard's Visma team, told the portal "radsport-news.com" before the start of the 15th stage of the Giro d'Italia.
The Dane had crashed so hard at the Tour of the Basque Country on 4 April that he suffered serious lung injuries. He also suffered several fractures. "His recovery is going quite well, but we'll have to see how it goes in the coming weeks," Reef continued. As a result, Vingegaard will not take part in any more races until the start of the Tour on 29 June. His biggest rival, Tadej Pogacar, who is currently dominating the Giro d'Italia and also wants to start in the Tour, is benefiting from Vingegaard's difficult preparation.
The 2022 and 2023 Tour winner spoke out himself at the beginning of May. "Of course I hope to be able to start at the Tour," said the 27-year-old Vingegaard. "We don't yet know exactly what my form will be like and how my recovery will continue, but I will do everything I can to be in good shape."
