Top Belgian cycling talent Remco Evenepoel has taken the lead in the overall standings at the Tour of the Basque Country.
A third place on the fifth stage, nine seconds behind the day's winner Carlos Rodriguez from Spain, was enough for the 22-year-old to take the yellow jersey. The Slovenian Vuelta champion Primoz Roglic, who had previously been in the lead, only finished with the peloton after 163.8 kilometres between Zamudio and Mallabia.
Evenepoel leads the overall standings ahead of the final stage by two seconds from the Colombian Daniel Martinez, who finished second on Friday. The six-day tour ends on Saturday with the 135.7-kilometre queen stage with seven mountain classifications between Éibar and Arrate.
