Jubel bei Pello Bilbao (l), Julian Alaphilippe im Regenbogentrikot hat das Nachsehen.

Road cycling world champion Julian Alaphilippe narrowly missed out on his second stage win in a row at the Tour of the Basque Country.

The 29-year-old was outsprinted by Spaniard Pello Bilbao shortly before the finish line on the 181.7 kilometre third stage from Llodio to Amurrio. Third place went to the Russian Aleksandr Vlasov from the German Bora-hansgrohe team. Alaphilippe had won the second stage on Tuesday, taking his first win of the season.

Vuelta champion Primoz Roglic successfully defended his lead in the overall standings. The Slovenian is still five seconds ahead of Belgian talent Remco Evenepoel.
