Matthew Brennan’s fourth victory: The young sprinter from Great Britain has already secured his fourth stage win on his Vuelta debut. The 21-year-old won the 16th stage, covering 181.1 kilometres from Cortegana to La Rabida, in commanding fashion ahead of France’s Bryan Coquard and Belgium’s Vito Braet. The last rider to achieve four stage wins in the Tour of Spain was Primož Roglič in 2021.
Roglic is still waiting for a victory in this year’s Vuelta. The four-time overall winner remains in third place, 2 minutes and 10 seconds behind the leader, Spaniard Enric Mas. In second place, 2 minutes and 6 seconds behind, is the Austrian Felix Gall.
Things will only get serious again for the contenders for the overall victory on Thursday, when the 32.1-kilometre individual time trial takes place. This may well be Roglic’s last chance to turn the race in his favour. A fifth victory would make him the Vuelta’s all-time record winner.
On Wednesday, the sprinters could have another chance to shine. The 17th stage, covering 185 kilometres from Dos Hermanas to Seville, takes place on completely flat terrain. Brennan could therefore be in line for a fifth stage victory.
