A fourth place on the ninth stage after 171.4 kilometres from Villaviciosa to Les Praeres was enough for the 22-year-old to further distance himself from his direct rivals. South African Louis Meintjes took the day's victory in the mountain finish. The 30-year-old was the breakaway leader ahead of the Italians Samuele Battistella and Edoardo Zambanini.
In the battle for the red jersey, Evenepoel is now 1:12 minutes ahead of the Spaniard Enric Mas. Last year's winner Primoz Roglic from Slovenia is still third overall, 1:53 minutes back.
Monday is a rest day at the Vuelta. The race ends on 11 September in the Spanish capital Madrid.
