The top British talent, Matthew Brennan, has also won the second sprint stage of the Tour of Spain. The 21-year-old professional cyclist triumphed on the fifth stage, covering 173.3 kilometres between Falset and Roquetes, ahead of Belgium’s Jordi Meeus of the German Red Bull team and Italy’s Vincenzo Albanese. Brennan had already claimed victory on the second stage.
There were no changes at the top of the overall standings. The hot favourite, Tadej Pogacar, remains 3 minutes and 21 seconds ahead of his compatriot and four-time Vuelta winner, Primož Roglič. Marco Brenner is the highest-placed German in 15th place. The former German champion trails Pogacar by over six minutes.
Thursday is another day for the climbers; a breakaway group may well have a good chance. The toughest challenge on the 177.4-kilometre route between Alcossebre and Castelló lies in the final stage of the race. Around 20 kilometres from the finish, the riders will tackle the Puerto El Bartolo, a 9.4-kilometre climb with an average gradient of seven per cent. The upper section also includes a gravel stretch.
