At the Vuelta, the favourites for overall victory are in each other's sights. Victory in the mountain finish to La Laguna Negra de Vinuesa goes to a Spaniard.

Professional cyclist Remco Evenepoel has missed out on another jump to the top of the overall standings at the 78th Vuelta. After the steep ride up some 1700 metres to La Laguna Negra de Vinuesa, which the 23-year-old finished in 28th place, the US American Sepp Kuss defended his lead ahead of the Belgian.

The gap between the two riders remains at 1:09 minutes. After the 163.2 kilometres of the eleventh stage, the Spaniard Jesus Herrada won the uphill finish ahead of the Frenchman Romain Gregoire and the Dane Andreas Kron.

After three stages of Evenepoel in the red jersey, the climbing specialist had to relinquish the lead on day six of the Vuelta. He lost a lot of time on the leaders in the process. On Wednesday, Kuss and Evenepoel crossed the finish line in quick succession. No German rider finished in the top ten.

On the 151 kilometres between Olvega and Zaragoza, the riders can expect a route with two smaller climbs on Thursday, which will probably lead to a bunch sprint at the finish. The Tour of Spain ends in Madrid on 17 September.
