Professional cyclist Nikias Arndt has advanced to third place overall in the 77th Vuelta.
The 30-year-old finished sixth as part of a breakaway group on the 187.2-kilometre fifth stage from Irun to Bilbao and is now 1:09 minutes behind the new overall leader Rudy Molard from France. The stage win in Bilbao, where the Tour de France will start in 2023, went to Spaniard Marc Soler.
The top favourites around last year's winner Primoz Roglic reached the finish around five minutes behind. The Slovenian thus relinquished the leader's red jersey after just one day.
But Roglic could regain the lead as early as Thursday. Because the first mountain finish of this year's Tour of Spain awaits. The sixth stage over 181.2 kilometres, starting in Bilbao, will finish with the Ascensión al Pico Jano. San Miguel de Aguayo.
