Cycling star Jonas Vingegaard has won the 20th and penultimate stage of the Giro in impressive style and is therefore on the verge of his maiden victory in the legendary Tour of Italy. Ten kilometres before the finish, the 29-year-old Dane pulled away from his rivals on the final descent of the 200-kilometre mountain stage between Gemona del Friuli and the winter sports resort of Piancavallo and confidently defended the pink jersey.
"We really wanted to win on the last day in the mountains," said a satisfied Vingegaard at the finish. It was his fifth stage win at this year's Giro. The Tour de France winner from 2022 and 2023 continues to lead the overall standings ahead of the finale with a 5:22-minute advantage over Austrian Felix Gall. Former Giro winner Jai Hindley from Australia is third, 6:25 minutes behind.
The final stage of the 109th Giro d'Italia will be held in Rome this Sunday. The route takes the peloton 131 kilometres through the Eternal City. Traditionally, the wearer of the pink jersey is no longer attacked on the final stage.
