Belgian rider Thomas de Gendt has won the eighth stage of the Giro d'Italia.
The 35-year-old professional cyclist from Team Lotto-Soudal won in the final sprint of a breakaway quartet ahead of the Italian Davide Gabburo (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè) and the Spaniard Jorge Arcas (Moviestar) on the circuit through Naples.
In the overall standings, Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez (Trek-Segafredo) retained the pink jersey, while Lennard Kämna of the German team Bora-hansgrohe remains in second place, 38 seconds behind.
Sunday's ninth stage promises to be very exciting, as there are a total of five climbs on the 190-kilometre route. It goes from Isernia up to the mountain finish with the most difficult final climb of the Giro d'Italia to the Blockhaus.
