After 164.5 kilometres Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) on stage 1 of the Tour of Catalonia 2023 before Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quick Step) came first. Third place went to Dutchman Ide Schelling from the German team Bora-Hansgrohe.
Cataldo taken away by ambulance
The stage was overshadowed by a serious crash at high speed a few kilometres before the finish. Several riders were injured. The Italian Dario Cataldo (Trek-Segafredo) was lying on the pavement with a bleeding wound and had to be taken away by ambulance.
The second stage of the 2023 Tour of Catalonia continues on Tuesday. After 165.5 kilometres, a mountain finish in Vallter is on the agenda.

The Volta a Catalunya is regarded as an important test of form for the Giro d'Italia in May. After seven stages, the race ends on Sunday in Barcelona. For Roglic and Evenepoel, it is a kind of dress rehearsal, as the duel will also take place at the second largest national tour in Italy.
