The Tour of Catalonia 2025 is the 105th edition of the traditional race. Most of the winners come from Spain, such as record winner Mariano Canardo, who won seven times in the 1920s and 30s. The last Spanish winner was Alejandro Valverde, who won in 2017 and 2018. Last year's winner is Tadej Pogačar, who will not be competing again and is fully focussed on the classics. With Primož Roglič (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe), Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates - XRG), Egan Bernal and Geraint Thomas (both INEOS Grenadiers), Richard Carapaz (EF Education - EasyPost), Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step) and Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl - Trek), there will nevertheless be numerous Tour stars at the start. It will be an interesting week of racing, especially from a German perspective. Lennard Kämna (Lidl - Trek) will be making his comeback after his serious accident in Tenerife in 2024, while Emanuel Buchmann (Cofidis) and Georg Steinhauser (EF Education - EasyPost) have also announced their participation.

The 1st stage traditionally goes around Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Three sprint classifications and two mountain classifications provide plenty of points that can be collected along the way. The places in the breakaway group will be correspondingly coveted. After 178.6 kilometres and almost 3,000 metres of climbing, the classification riders could be in demand, as the last kilometre is another steep climb. 2024 Nick Schultz won ahead of Tadej Pogačar in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, 2023 Primož Roglič ahead of Remco Evenepoel.

The sprinters are likely to be at the front for the first time on the second day. Although the Coll de Sant Pere de Rodes is a category 1 climb, its summit is around 80 kilometres before the finish. There is enough time to catch up with any breakaway riders afterwards. The finishing straight also climbs in Figueres. However, this should not prevent any of the fast riders from taking part in the battle for the stage win.
Stage 3 | 26 March 2025 | Viladecans - La Molina | 218.6 kilometres | 5093 vertical metres

The 3rd stage of the Tour of Catalonia is likely to be the first battle between the classification riders. With more than 5,000 metres of climbing, it is the queen stage of this year's Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. The finish is in the La Molina ski resort, which has often hosted the tour. The final climb is not particularly tough at 12 kilometres with an average gradient of less than five percent and a short descent before the finish. In combination with the Coll de la Crueta, which is over 20 kilometres long, it is nevertheless likely to cause a lot of leg pain for the riders and create gaps in the classification.
Stage 4 | 27 March 2025 | Sant Vicenç de Castellet - Montserrat | 188.7 kilometres | 3089 vertical metres

Stage 4 of the Tour of Catalonia 2025 has around 2000 metres less elevation gain than the previous stage. However, with an average gradient of 6.5 per cent over around nine kilometres, the final climb of stage 4 is significantly tougher than the previous day. Once again, the classification specialists are in demand.

Day five offers the last opportunity for the sprinters to win a stage in the Tour of Catalonia 2025. It is also the stage with the fewest metres in altitude (1320). The Coll de La Font is the only category 3 climb in the first part of the stage.

+++ UPDATE ON STAGE 6
As the organisers announced on the eve of the stage, the Coll de Pradell cannot be ridden due to the strong winds. Coll de la Batallola (3rd category), Collada de Sant Isidre (1st category) and the final climb to Queralt remain on the programme. The stage is therefore only 118.6 kilometres long and no longer 159 kilometres as originally planned.
Stage 7 | 30 March 2025 | Barcelona - Barcelona | 88.2 kilometres

Traditionally, the last stage of the Tour of Catalonia leads through Barcelona. On a circular route, it goes over the Alt del Castell de Montjuic six times - one right after the other. The traditional final climb of recent years is short but steep. From a sprint by a small group, a breakaway victory or even a duel between two classification riders - anything is possible on this course.
