The Tour of Catalonia is one of the oldest races on the professional circuit. And one of the toughest. For sprinters, there is traditionally not much to gain in north-east Spain. That won't change this year either. Three of the seven stages end with a mountain finish, the rest are very hilly.

Tour of Catalonia 2024: The most important facts in brief

The Tour of Catalonia will be held for the 103rd time in 2024. The majority of winners are of Spanish origin, including record winner Mariano Canardo, who won seven times in the 1920s and 30s. The last Spaniard to be successful in Catalonia was Alejandro Valverde, who won in 2017 and 2018. Last year's winner is Primoz Roglic, who will not be competing again. However, other big names such as Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Sepp Kuss (Visma | Lease a Bike), Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal (both Ineos Grenadiers) have already confirmed their participation.

More than 18,000 metres in altitude are spread over seven stages. No wonder, as two out of three mountain finishes end in a ski resort. But even the more moderate stages have at least 1,200 metres of elevation gain. The total distance of the tour is approximately 1200 kilometres.

The race starts in Sant Feliu de Guixols with a circuit along the coast north of Barcelona. Four climbs and three sprint finishes provide plenty of points that can be collected along the way. Accordingly, the battle for the first breakaway group of the tour will be fierce. However, after 174 kilometres and almost 2300 metres of climbing, the candidates for overall victory will be at the front.

Stage 2 | 19 March 2024 | Mataro - Vallter 2000 | 186.5 kilometres

This also applies to the 2nd stage, which finishes in the Vallter 2000 ski area after 186.5 kilometres. It is the longest of the race. After a relaxed 100 kilometres from the coastal town of Mataro towards the Pyrenees, the route slowly climbs. The first category 1 climb, the Coll de Coubert, has to be conquered first. And then it's all the way to the top - up to 2135 metres above sea level, the highest point of the race. There, in the immediate vicinity of the French border, not only the air becomes thin, but also the number of potential contenders for victory.

Stage 3 | 20 March 2024 | Sant Joan de les Abadesses - Port Aine | 176.7 kilometres

The second Pyrenean stage in a row begins in Sant Joan de les Abadesses. It goes once from east to west through the mountains, 3900 metres in altitude await. The Port de Toses and the Port de Cabto (both 1st category) are crossed one after the other before the route leads up to the ski area at Port Aine. It doesn't quite go over 2000 metres, but the 3rd stage is still one step more difficult than the day before.

Stage 4 | 21 March 2024 | Sort - Lleida | 169 kilometres

It doesn't get any easier than the fourth section between Sort at the foot of Port Aine and Lleida. 1200 metres in altitude, the mountain of the day, the Port d'Ager (2nd category), is crossed before the middle of the race. The finale is flat by Catalonian standards. If not here, then nowhere else will work out for the narrow sprinters around Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Elia Viviani (Ineos Grenadiers).

Stage 5 | 22 March 2024 | Altafulla - Viladecans | 167.3 kilometres

After a few kilometres of travelling, stage 5 starts in Altafulla. On the way to Viladecans on the outskirts of Barcelona, there are two relatively steep category 2 climbs to master, the last of which is around 30 kilometres before the finish. After the descent, there are still around 15 flat kilometres to the finish. It could be the day for the breakaway.

Stage 6 | 23 March 2024 | Berga - Queralt | 154.7 kilometres

This is because the GC riders are likely to take it easy for the queen stage. Instead, on day 6, they will head back to the edge of the Pyrenees to Berga. 4000 metres in altitude await, more than on any other day. After two mountains to warm up, the Coll de Pradell (Categoria Especial) is the biggest challenge of the day. This is followed by the Collada de Sant Isidre and the final climb up to the pilgrimage site of Queralt, which will be tackled for the first time in the history of the Tour of Catalonia. A preliminary decision in the overall classification is likely to be made here.

Stage 7 | 24 March 2024 | Barcelona - Barcelona | 145.3 kilometres

After almost reaching Barcelona in the finale of stage 5, the Catalan capital is the setting for the final day of the tour. Firstly, the riders head into the city's hinterland, where the Coll de la Creu de l'Ordal is ridden over. The peloton then returns to the city and rides up and down the Alt del Vastell de Montjuic six times - one right after the other. The traditional final climb of recent years is short but steep. Last year, Evenepoel and Roglic gained a minute on the competition here, the year before a large group sprinted to victory. Depending on how the race is ridden and whether lively riders like Pogacar (have to) go all out, there may be more to come here than one or the other would like.
