The Vuelta a Burgos 2025 is just around the corner and serves as important preparation for many riders for the Vuelta a España, which starts soon. After his solo victory at the Clásica San Sebastián, Giulio Ciccone is one of the favourites, but will have to hold his own against strong competition such as Isaac Del Toro, Egan Bernal and Mikel Landa. The five-day tour traditionally ends with the mountain finish on the Lagunas de Neila.
Isaac Del Toro is one of the top favourites for overall victory. The 21-year-old Mexican from UAE Team Emirates - XRG has already put in an impressive performance this season. At the Giro d'Italia, he fought for overall victory right up to the final mountain stage, but was ultimately beaten by Simon Yates. "It's an emotionally difficult period," said Mikel Landa after his crash at the Giro d'Italia, in which he suffered a fractured vertebrae. The Spaniard from Soudal Quick-Step returns to racing in Burgos and will test his form for the Vuelta a España. Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers) had a longer break from competition after his seventh place at the Tour of Italy. The Colombian, who won the Tour de France earlier in his career, could show in Burgos that he is ready for the Vuelta. Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) will be riding with a lot of confidence after his impressive victory at the Clásica San Sebastián. The Italian had to abandon the Giro d'Italia after a crash and is out to make amends. But Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe is also bringing two strong climbers to the start with 21-year-old Giulio Pellizzari and the experienced Jai Hindley. Pellizzari in particular surprised in the spring with a sixth place in the overall classification of the Giro d'Italia. XDS Astana also has several options for the overall standings with Harold Martin López, Lorenzo Fortunato and Wout Poels.
Almost 852 kilometres have to be covered over five days in the 2025 Tour of Burgos - no leisurely stages! Only on the second day could the sprinters get a chance. The decision in the battle for overall victory is likely to be made on day five.
As in the previous year, the 2025 Tour of Burgos begins with the finish in Burgos. 205 kilometres to the start with one category 1 and two category 3 climbs promise breakaway attempts on the first stage. However, gaps in the overall classification are not yet expected.
On the second day, it's the sprinters' turn: with 162 kilometres and no categorised climbs, the sprinters and their teams should be able to keep a breakaway group under control. The last kilometre is downhill once again, which is why everything points to a bunch sprint.
The third day of the Tour of Burgos is likely to be one for the riders in the general classification, or for a group. With undulating terrain in the first half of the race, there is unlikely to be any major selection of the peloton. However, the Puerto de Oceka climb is really tough. Only advertised as category 3 because it only measures 2.7 kilometres, it has an average gradient of 8.9 per cent, so many riders will have to let go here. 22 kilometres before the finish, the 1st category climb will be the day's decider. Here, the strongest overall classification rider could start a solo ride and reach the finish alone. A small group with a sprint to the finish is also possible.
The 4th stage of the Tour of Burgos 2025 is undulating until shortly before the finish and would be something for the more mountain-hardy sprinters if there wasn't a double climb 14 kilometres before the finish. Only one of these two climbs is categorised and they are not steep either, with gradients of 3-4 per cent. This should suit a breakaway group, which could break away as early as kilometre 121, the only other categorised climb. The constant ups and downs seem perfect for a classic rider.
The overall classification will be decided on the last day of the tour. With the traditional arrival in Lagunas de Neila, the riders face the most difficult day. Steadily uphill with small descents, the route leads up to the Alto de Rozavientos climb, which at 9.3 per cent over 3.5 kilometres should ensure that a small group of the favourites remain in the race. If they haven't attacked here yet, this will happen at the latest on the final climb to Lagunas de Neila, which will decide the overall classification with its 6.5 kilometres and 9.2 per cent gradient.
Unfortunately, there is no German TV coverage for the Tour of Burgos. There is also no livestream available.
