Aberdeen (dpa) - Former star André Greipel narrowly missed out on his 159th career victory. The 39-year-old sprinted to second place at the end of the 17th Tour of Britain.

He relegated his old rival Mark Cavendish to third place on the 173-kilometre section from Stonehaven to Aberdeen. However, the Belgian Wout van Aert managed to overtake him. The Olympic silver medallist thus secured overall victory after eight stages with a six-second lead over Great Britain's Ethan Hayter, also thanks to the time credits.

Greipel ends his career in a few weeks. With his 158 victories, he is the most successful professional cyclist still active.
