Former Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas has won the Tour of Switzerland for the first time in his career.

Thomas intercepts Higuita

The Welshman from Team Ineos Grenadiers took second place in the final individual time trial of the Tour de Suisse in Vaduz (Liechtenstein), the Colombian Sergio Higuita from the German Bora-hansgrohe team was knocked out of first place in the overall standings.

The battle against the clock over 25.6 kilometres was won by Belgian rider Remco Evenepoel (Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team) by three seconds, with German road champion Maximilian Schachmann finishing in sixth place.

Thomas is travelling to the Tour de France with good omens

Thomas can therefore also hope for a successful Tour de France make. The 36-year-old won the Tour of France in 2018 and finished second overall a year later.

A good omen for the Ineos captain: before his Tour triumph in 2018, he had won the Criterium du Dauphine also had a successful dress rehearsal. Behind Thomas, Higuita and the Dane Jakob Fuglsang took second and third place in the overall standings.

Numerous corona cases

The Tour de Suisse was overshadowed by numerous corona cases. Finally, three-time road cycling world champion Peter Sagan was also caught out, having tested positive for coronavirus for the third time in 18 months.

Before Sagan, who won the third stage of the Tour of Switzerland, more than 40 riders had already had to finish the race due to the corona pandemic.
