Professional cyclist Nico Denz from Fribourg celebrated the greatest success of his career at the 85th Tour de Suisse, which was overshadowed by many corona cases.
The 28-year-old from the DSM team won the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse After 177.5 kilometres, Denz won the sprint of a five-man breakaway group to claim only the third professional victory of his career. Denz came out on top ahead of Frenchman Clement Champoussin (AG2R CITRÖEN TEAM) and Spaniard José Herrada (Cofidis).
Denz, who rode a tactically clever race, had previously only two stage wins to his name at the Tour of Slovakia and the Tour de Vendée. In 2018, he also rode to victory in the tenth stage of the Giro d'Italia also took second place.
The Dane Jakob Fuglsang (Israel - Premier Tech) is leading the overall standings after the Russian Aleksandr Vlasov from the German Bora-Hansgrohe team had to finish the race in first place on Friday morning due to a positive corona test.
The UAE team and the teams Bahrain Victorious and Alpecin-Fenix even withdrew their teams completely due to several corona cases, after the Dutch Jumbo-Visma team had already withdrawn the day before.
A total of 29 riders did not start the sixth stage, but the tour continued nonetheless. In addition to Vlasov, who had only taken the yellow jersey on Thursday, the Bora team was also hit by the German Anton Palzer.
