During an international cycle race on the French overseas island of Guadeloupe, two cyclists simply hitched a ride on a fast-moving support vehicle in order to make rapid progress without having to pedal. As Nicholas Narraway (Competitive Edge Racing) and Jason Jacquet Cretides (Uni Sport Lamentinois) were filmed carrying out this brazen manoeuvre during Monday’s fourth stage, the Tour de la Guadeloupe has disqualified them. This was reported by the broadcaster Guadeloupe 1, citing the organisers.
The two were fined just over 100 euros and were demoted in the UCI World Road Cycling Rankings. Christopher Drummond, the sports director of the US team Competitive Edge Racing, was also fined just over 100 euros. Furthermore, for the remainder of the Tour, his vehicle will be systematically relegated to the rear of the sports directors’ convoy, regardless of his riders’ positions in the general classification. The 75th edition of the Tour de la Guadeloupe runs until 9 August.
There had already been a stir at the cycle race last year because two Dutch cyclists had simply taken a shortcut and hidden behind a stationary car, only to catch up with the passing peloton later on. However, the two cheats were caught out and disqualified.
