Professional cyclist Mauro Schmid has won the longest stage of this year’s Tour de France. The 26-year-old Swiss rider claimed his first stage victory in the Tour de France near the German border after 205.8 kilometres on the 13th stage between Dole and Belfort. He won the sprint ahead of Harold Tejada from Colombia. Britain’s Tom Pidcock came third.
Germany’s Florian Lipowitz dropped from sixth to seventh place in the general classification. Pidcock – part of an XXL breakaway group – has shaken up the standings somewhat. The 26-year-old is now fourth, 4 minutes and 15 seconds behind the overall leader, Tadej Pogacar. Jonas Vingegaard is in second place, 3 minutes and 36 seconds behind Pogacar, whilst Lipowitz’s team-mate Remco Evenepoel is in third, just over four minutes behind the Slovenian.
Two gruelling mountain challenges lie ahead this weekend. It all kicks off with Stage 14 in the Vosges, near the border with Germany. On Saturday, this stage – which involves a 3,800-metre climb – features three Category 1 climbs and one Category 2 climb.
