The background to this was a clash of dates after the cycling world federation brought the Tour forward by a week due to the Olympic Games in Tokyo being postponed to 2021. This in turn cancelled the start of the Tour in Copenhagen, as otherwise two major events would have taken place in Copenhagen at the same time due to the European Football Championships, which have also been postponed to next year.
The race will kick off in Brest on 26 June, with the first four stages taking place in Brittany. This is the fourth time that Brest has hosted the start of the Tour after 1952, 1974 and 2008.
