After the most demanding Grand Départ in over ten years, the field of the 110th Tour de France can take a short breather. The third stage leads over 193.5 kilometres from Amorebieta-Etxano to Bayonne and should offer the sprinters their first opportunity for a stage win.
The route was changed at short notice for safety reasons. Because new roundabouts and traffic islands had appeared after the planning stage, the tour organisers looked for an alternative route with fewer obstacles. As a result, the stage has become around five kilometres longer.
