On the way to the vineyards of the Beaujoulais, breakaway riders with a strong climbing ability are likely to have the best chance of winning a stage in the Tour de France. The twelfth stage starts on Thursday in Roanne and is rather undulating before becoming much more challenging in the second part.
Two second-category climbs have to be tackled on the last 50 of the 168.8 kilometres. Bonus seconds are also up for grabs on the Col de la Croix Rosier. Before the five difficult Alpine stages, however, it is unlikely that chaser Tadej Pogacar will want to secure the time credit in his hunt for Jonas Vingegaard's yellow jersey.
