Following his withdrawal from the Tour de France and the subsequent operation, Florian Lipowitz has returned to his home. “He’s back home. He’s following the race and sending us messages. We’re in touch,” said team manager Ralph Denk after the 19th stage at Alpe d’Huez.
Lipowitz, who is based in Seefeld, Austria, where he lives and trains, crashed in a right-hand bend during Tuesday’s individual time trial and broke his right collarbone. As well as the shoulder injury, the 25-year-old sustained several grazes. The Swabian underwent surgery shortly afterwards and only had to spend a short time in hospital.
For last year’s third-placed rider in the Tour, the next major races are effectively out of the question. He is unlikely to be fit in time for the Vuelta a España (22 August to 13 September) and the World Championships in Montreal (20 to 27 September). At best, one-day races in Italy, such as the Tour of Lombardy (10 October), may still be possible in the autumn. Nevertheless, Denk is still expecting to make a comeback this year.
