Cycling superstar Tadej Pogacar has mastered the first tough mountain finish of this Tour de France in the Pyrenees with flying colours and reclaimed the yellow jersey. The 27-year-old won the sixth stage in commanding fashion and left his main rivals trailing in his wake.
After an explosive surge on the Col du Tourmalet, just under 45 kilometres from the finish, and a long solo ride, the Slovenian was unstoppable. He celebrated his 23rd stage victory in the Tour de France.
After 186.2 kilometres between Pau and Gavarnie-Gédre, Pogacar won, finishing more than two and a half minutes ahead of his rival Jonas Vingegaard, who was well behind. German star Florian Lipowitz crossed the line in another chasing group, just under three minutes behind Pogacar.
Torstein Traeen, who had surprisingly spent two days in the yellow jersey, was unable to keep up on the Tourmalet. To make matters worse, the Norwegian crashed on the descent from the mountain and had to receive medical treatment. However, the Scandinavian was later able to continue.
On Friday, it will once again be the sprinters among the Tour professionals who take centre stage. From Hagetmau, the peloton will ride 175.1 kilometres across flat terrain to the wine capital of Bordeaux. Extreme temperatures of up to 40 degrees are expected once again.
