German cycling star Florian Lipowitz is on the road to recovery following his collarbone fracture at the Tour de France. “I’m doing quite well, considering the circumstances. The operation went well. I’m back home now and focusing on my recovery,” said Lipowitz, who was interviewed by telephone on ARD during Sunday’s final stage.
He said he’d received a lot of feedback over the last few days, even though he hadn’t been on his mobile that often. “It’s obviously brilliant to see all the fans and people outside the sport sending me their support. That gives me a boost. I’ll need a few more days,” added last year’s third-place finisher.
Comeback plan not yet clear
Following his crash on Tuesday in the individual time trial, he said he had “put the Tour to one side for a bit”. The 25-year-old remained vague about his plans for a comeback. “I’ll be happy when I’m completely pain-free again. I’m still struggling with my ribs and my breathing,” said Lipowitz.
National coach Jens Zemke had previously expressed his hope that he would be able to call on Lipowitz at the World Championships in Montreal (20 to 27 September). “I do think it’s a realistic prospect. A broken collarbone isn’t the end of the world,” Zemke told the German Press Agency.
