The decisive stage for the Tour victory begins short and crisp. In just 90 kilometres, 2613 metres of altitude have to be overcome. After a 13-kilometre descent from the Col d'Aspin, it's straight into the climb to the legendary Tourmalet. With an average gradient of 7.3 per cent, the 17-kilometre ascent to the roof of this year's women's Tour de France is merciless. The Pyrenean giant is regularly on the men's programme and was climbed for the first time in 1910 by the then Tour de France winner Octave Lapize.

Lisa Brennauer's assessment of stage 7 of the women's Tour de France

"With Aspin and Tourmalet, clearly the queen stage. Anyone who shows weakness here probably has no chance of winning the overall classification. But it's also a stage where you can still turn a deficit into a lead. Definitely a day for the absolute mountain specialists and a great opportunity to decide the overall standings in advance."
